It is very important to check your contractors out before giving them potentially thousands of dollars to start.
How do you do that? Ask questions! If the contractor is offended-too bad!
Here are some steps.
1. Check the license. Make sure the Company Name is correct and the license holder name is correct.
2. Ask to see the insurance binder. Check the date/agent name and his/her phone #. Don’t be afraid to call the agent to make sure the policy is current.
3. Check at least 3 references. If they can’t provide them, don’t hire them.
4. Ask if they are a member of any orginization, such as the HBA or Chamber of Commerse. Don’t worry if they aren’t, but if they are, check to make sure they are in good standing.
5. Never pay the entire amount up front, unless it is a particularily small small job.
6. Go with your insticts. If you don’t have a good warm and fuzzy, don’t hire them.

These are time consuming things to do, which is why most people don’t do it. That is also why many people get ripped off by illigitamate “carpenters” and service companies.
